June 2019 Google Broad Core Update – An Exploration

As reported by Search Engine Land, and Dany Sullivan at Google themselves, the most recent Google Broad Core Update finished rolling out June 8, 2019. The update began rolling out on June 3, 2019 and took 5 days to finish fully updating across the globe.

What is a Google Broad Core Update?

A Broad Core Update at Google is simply a large update to the search algorithm that has no clear or distinct purpose at the time of launch. In fact, due to the seemingly mysterious nature of core updates, many SEO experts refer to them as “under the hood” updates. While it is true that some earlier core updates have targeted specific things (Panda and Penguin), this is not the typical modus operandi for Google. Broad Core Updates are usually released several times a year.

The Google Diversity Update Was Also Made Live During this Time

The June 2019 Broad Core Update was not the only update that Google pushed live during the first week of June. They also released what is known as the Diversity Update. This update aims to help increase the number of different websites that show up in search results and to reduce the number of times a single URL can be shown for a search query. This update took significantly less time to be made live. Google started rolling out the update on June 4 and it finished being pushed live on June 6, 2019.

What is the Impact of the June 2019 Broad Core Google Update?

Unlike previous large updates to the Google algorithm (like Panda and Penguin), Google hasn’t provided very much concrete information on exactly what this Broad Core Update is targeting or trying to change. And, unfortunately, it is still a little early to say exactly what types of websites and search results were directly affected by the update. Google did state, however, that the update was big in a quick quote from Danny Sullivan:
“Those are definitely noticeable. That’s why we confirm them.” – Danny Sullivan, Twitter @dannysullivan
So far, the following types of results are showing changes that are seemingly attributable to the June 2019 Broad Core Update at Google:
  • Trusted aggregator sites got a slight boost in authority and rank
  • Video Carousels seem to have shown an increase in the number of results shown.
  • Lower-quality news sites seem to be taking a bit of a hit in rank and authority.

What About the Impact of the Diversity Update?

So far, this update has seemed to quite effectively curb multiple listings of URL’s from the same domain in search results on Google. However, it is still a little too early to tell whether or not this trend will continue. The Diversity Update is quite plainly explained by Google.
“Have you ever done a search and gotten many listings all from the same site in the top results? We’ve heard your feedback about this and wanting more variety. A new change now launching in Google Search is designed to provide more site diversity in our results…” – Google SearchLiaison, Twitter @searchliaison
