Google March Broad Core Update – Florida 2 Update News
According to Mr. Danny Sullivan at Google, the search engine giant has launched its March 2019 Broad Core Update (dubbed “Florida 2”) as of March 30th, 2019. This was a large core algorithm update that may carry some search engine result fluctuations with it. Let’s dive into what has changed and what has remained the same with this recent core algorithm update.
Just What is a Broad Core Update?
Every year Google releases a couple of broad core updates to their search ranking algorithm. A “broad core update”, according to Search Engine Land and Google, is:
“A core update is a tweak or change to the main search algorithm itself,” says Ryan Jones of Search Engine Land. “What a core update means to me is that Google slightly tweaked the importance, order, weights, or values to these [Google Search ranking] signals. Because of that, they can’t come right out and tell us what changed without revealing secret sauce”
To put things even more simply, a broad core update to the Google Search Engine is an update to the search ranking algorithm itself, rather than a tweak to one of the many variables that contribute to said algorithm. These changes happen just a few times a year at most.
What Changed With the March “Florida 2” Broad Core Algorithm Update?
These broad core updates change the core search algorithm of Google as a whole rather than individual search signals and factors. With this recent March 2019 core update (called Florida 2), many SEO industry professionals have theorized that this update is more of a rollback of previous core updates than a change towards something new. However, since the update was only a few days ago (March 30, 2019), it is still a little too early to tell just what has changed to the core algorithm. According to Brett Tabke (founder of WebmasterWorld):
“Well, as you can tell from the Google forum, we are a little too early to tell.Originally guidance from Google was this was going to be one of the largest updates we’ve seen in a “very long time” (their words). So far, it doesn’t appear that is the case.In fact, I think we may be seeing a rollback of a few of the last updates” – Brett Tabke
Did Your Rankings Suffer after Florida 2? What Can You Do About it?
The short answer here is “nothing”. You can’t do much of anything to combat a broad core update affecting your search engine placement. In fact, according to a tweet from Danny Sullivan of Google states:
“There’s nothing to ‘fix’ for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”
This is almost always Google’s response to falling ranks after an update to their search algorithm (core or otherwise). We believe that Google wants to remain vague in these kinds of statements to avoid SEO professionals “gaming” their search algorithm and forcing rank growth on pages that Google doesn’t deem deserving. As usual, their only advice is to continue to create great content. If your content has dropped in rank and you think you’ve created something that is really worth web traffic and recognition, then just continue to update and create better and better content that more precisely matches what users are searching for. Google cares about making their search results relevant and useful to the user, not about making life easy for content creators and SEO professionals. So, if you create buzz-worthy content, then you should be able to rank quite well on Google (provided you also follow their guidelines for indexing and other content related rules and regulations).
Why Was This Core Update Dubbed “Florida 2”?
Back in the early 2000s, Google had a core algorithm update that they called the Google Florida Update. It was so named because of the annual SEO conference (Pubcon) that takes place in Florida happening to coincide with the timing of the broad core update. Since this update also happened to coincide with the Pubcon conference, Brett Tabke (of WebmasterWorld) decided that this update will be named Google Florida Update 2 (WebmasterWorld has often been the blog/company to name the Google updates within the SEO community).
